Pathways to a Law Enforcement Career

High School or Beyond

A career in law enforcement offers diverse pathways with varying responsibilities, requiring strong communication, problem-solving, and physical and mental health and wellness. TEEX Law Enforcement and Protective Services provides multiple course options that an individual can take while still in high school or beyond that will prepare you for your future career!

Be a Dispatcher

This online course is designed to prepare participants to perform successfully as a telecommunications call taker or dispatcher.

Be a Security Officer

This online course is designed to provide participants with the concepts and skills necessary of a non-commissioned security officer in the State of Texas.

Be a Municipal Jailer

This online course prepares participants to begin a career with the knowledge and skills necessary to work in a municipal jail or detention facility environment.

Be a Forensics Professional

These online courses prepare participants to begin a career as a forensics and investigative professional. Most courses are also eligible for ACE credit!


High School Graduates and Career Professionals

Additionally, other course offerings are available once you graduate high school or as your professional career takes off. These pathways often have additional prerequisite requirements and/or age requirements for admittance into the course or program of study.

Be a UXO Technician

Receive hands-on training in the detection, location, identification, and disposal of unexploded ordnance using the techniques and emerging technologies of today’s UXO remediation industry. Graduates of the course meet U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) requirements necessary to work as a UXO Tech I on USACE UXO remediation job sites. Applicants for this program must be at least 18 years of age and pass a criminal background check and drug screening.

Be a Telecommunicator

Proper use of technology and effectively communicating under stressful situations are vital skills telecommunication personnel should possess. This course prepares participants to perform successfully as a TCOLE licensed telecommunications call taker or dispatcher. Applicants must meet all TCOLE minimum standards for licensing and must have a current, nationally recognized Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate/card.

Be a County Jailer

This training is offered as a blended-learning event so that individuals can operate effectively within a county jail environment with the necessary knowledge and skills to keep themselves, their co-workers, and those in their custody and control safe and secured. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, meet all TCOLE minimum license standards, and be employed with a Texas Sheriff’s office or private jail facility with a TCOLE temporary jailer license.

Be a Peace Officer

The Central Texas Police Academy (CTPA) delivers the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC) with graduates eligible for Texas Peace Officer licensure. Participants receive classroom training designed to prepare each individual for the state licensing examination and engage in hands-on training to better acquaint them to the rigors of police work. Applicants for this program must be at least 21 years of age before the class end date.
