Course Description

This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to conduct advanced exterior shoring operations at large-scale structural collapse incidents. You will expand your shoring knowledge learned in the 80-hour Structural Collapse Technician course by constructing large and complex exterior shoring systems in Disaster City®.

The skills learned in this course are applicable at structural collapses involving multi-story, heavily-reinforced structures such as office buildings and large apartment complexes. Activities include multiple simulated operational periods in which you will employ skills learned during the course.

This course is one of the requirements for the Urban Search and Rescue Specialist Certificate program.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites are required to attend this course. Participants must bring their certificates of completion on the first day of class. Participants that do not have the prerequisites will be removed from the class.

Participants Must Provide

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Due to the strenuous nature of search and rescue activities, participants should secure a professional evaluation of their physical condition prior to enrolling in this course.

  • Compound Raker Shores
  • Double-Insertion Split-Sole Raker System
  • Triple Insertion Point Solid-Sole Raker System

Suggested Audience

This course has been developed for city, state, and federal US&R responders. The target audience also includes all emergency responders from municipal and industrial agencies tasked with conducting advancing shoring operations at large-scale structural collapse incidents.

Participants include emergency responders from the following disciplines/services:

  • Fire Service (FS)
  • Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
  • Law Enforcement (LE)
  • Industrial Customers (IND)
  • Weapons of Mass Destruction-Civilian Support Teams (WMD-CST)
  • CBRNE Enhanced Response Force Packages (CERFP) Teams
  • Homeland Response Forces (HRF)
  • Army and Air National Guard (ANG)
  • State Guard Forces

Travel and Personal Protective Equipment

Participants should plan travel to arrive the night before classes begin.  Classes will begin at 7 a.m. on the first day of class unless other arrangements have been made.  Classes will begin at 7 a.m. on the first day of class unless other arrangements have been made.  The course delivery is at Disaster City? in College Station, Texas. Responders that will be training on the rubble pile or inside of structures at Disaster City? are required to bring the following items to the course:

  • Helmet, must be ANSI rated Z89.1-Type 1 with headlamp
  • Steel-toe safety boots, must be ANSI Z41 PT99 M1/75 C/75
  • Eye protection, must be ANSI Z87.1
  • Work gloves (leather or extrication gloves)
  • Standard work/duty clothing including long-sleeve shirts for every day of class
  • Raingear suitable for search and rescue operations. Class exercises are conducted in rain or shine.
  • Knee pads and elbow pads
  • Hand held flashlight and extra batteries

Additionally, you are encouraged to bring your issued Class 3 Life-Safety Harness that meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1983 standard. If you do not have a Class 3 Harness, we can provide one during the course. 

Course Offerings

Courses are offered in two ways:

  • Open enrollment is open to any agency listed above. These courses must have a minimum of 20 and can have a maximum of 30 participants. This course typically has a broad cross section of responders from across the nation and offers an excellent ability for lessons learned from other departments.
  • Contract classes: We can provide this course exclusively for a jurisdiction or region. When conducting contract classes, we can provide additional tailored curriculum and field exercises based on the requirements of the contracting jurisdiction.

Grant funding information

Jurisdictions that receive DHS funding from their State Administrative Agency (SAA) (e.g. Urban Area Security Initiatives [UASI], Strategic Highway Safety Plans [SHSP] etc.) may be able to utilize those funds to pay for TEEX/ESTI courses. Since states have varying processes and procedures for utilizing grant funds to take US&R training, the best resource will be your city or county administrator or comptroller of homeland security grant funding.

Conduct During Live Online Instructor-Led Courses

Course Cancellation Policy

If the minimum number of students required to conduct this class have not registered 24 calendar days prior to the class start date, the class will be canceled. It is imperative that agencies/individuals wishing to enroll in this course make arrangements to register and make payment prior to this deadline.
