Course Description

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to act as a live fire instructor in charge and safely provide live fire training to emergency responders by developing pre-burn plans, performing pre- and post-burn inspections, conducting pre- and post-burn briefings and maintaining the training environment.

Course Completion Requirements

Participants Must Provide 

  • Laptop computer, tablet, or similar device capable of operating word processing software. 

     (Example: Microsoft Word)

  • Method for approved file sharing with the instructors. Potential options include:
    • Flash drive
    • Thumb drive
    • Personal or work email account
    • Please note, the use of file sharing apps or software such as Dropbox are not permitted
  • A Government-issued photo ID. This will be required on the first and last days of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines. 
  • Participants must supply their own Person Protective Equipment (PPE/Bunker Gear) to include:
    • Jackets
    • Pants
    • Boots
    • Gloves
    • Hood
    • Helmet
    • Face Mask

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Participants must supply their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) aka Bunker Gear. 

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Identify the responsibilities of a live fire instructor in charge, demonstrate how to properly plan and maintain live fire training evolutions, and exhibit proper coaching techniques.
  • Prepare a pre-burn plan that meets the requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1403 Standard on Live Fire Training Evolutions, perform a pre-burn inspection, calculate water supply and flow, and conduct a pre-burn briefing session.
  • Conduct a post-burn critique and perform a post-burn inspection.

Suggested Audience

Fire personnel serving as instructors for live fire training centers and fire academies. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to act as a live fire instructor In-Charge and safely supervise live fire training and to ensure proper implementation of live fire training procedures before, during, & after training evolutions.  This course is targeted for firefighting personnel qualified to become live fire instructors in-charge.
