Course Description

peace officersPeace Officers play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the public. This course is designed for currently licensed or certified peace officers outside of the State of Texas, Federal Agents, and Military Police to meet training and licensing requirements set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) necessary to receive their Texas Peace Officer licensing. Of the current TCOLE Basic Peace Officer topics, there are seven topics specific to Texas covered in this course.

This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements Course #1018.

The online course consists of seven learning modules. Prior to accessing the course, the participant is provided with an opportunity to download a study guide in an effort to enhance the retention of important course information. After all modules have been completed, the participant will receive a comprehensive final exam. All examinations must be passed with a minimum score of 80%. Participants have three attempts to pass each module exam and one attempt to pass the final exam. Module quizzes and the final examination can only be done in a single seating. Module quizzes and the final examination should not be started while on duty and/or if the participant may be called away from the computer for any reason.

Note: Participants completing this course shall pass the same licensing exam as other applicants. It is suggested that participants study all topical areas of the current Texas Basic Peace Officer licensing course. TEEX offers a Basic Police Officer TCOLE Practice Exam as a study aide to assist with preparations for the the State test.

Individuals from Other States

  • Must demonstrate successful completion of a state POST-approved (or state licensing authority) basic police officer training academy (with equivalent course topics and hours of training); and
  • Must be currently licensed or certified as a peace officer by a state POST (or state licensing authority); and
  • The license or certificate must never have been, or currently in the process of being surrendered, suspended, or revoked; and
  • Have honorably served (employed; benefits eligible) as a sworn peace officer for twelve consecutive months, following initial basic training, with an agency in the state where the license or certificate was issued.

In addition, the licensee or certificate holder must meet all other statutory licensing requirements of the State of Texas and TCOLE Rules.

Federal Agents

  • Have successfully completed an approved Federal Agency Law Enforcement training course (equivalent course topics and hours); and must be subject to continued employment or eligible for re-hire (excluding retirement); and
  • Have honorably served (employed; benefits eligible) in one of the above federal capacities for twelve consecutive months, following initial basic training; and
  • Have successfully completed a Supplementary Peace Officer training course, the curriculum of which is developed by TCOLE.

In addition, the licensee or certificate holder must meet all other statutory licensing requirements of the State of Texas and TCOLE Rules.

Military Police

  • Must have a military police military occupation specialty (MOS) or air force specialty code (AFSC) classification approved by the commission.
  • Must provide proof of:
    • successfully completed basic military police course for branch of military served; and
    • active duty service for 2 continuous years. Service time applied to this section must have been obtained following completion of an approved basic military police course.

In addition, the licensee or certificate holder must meet all other statutory licensing requirements of the State of Texas and TCOLE Rules.

Texas Peace Officer

Please refer to the TCOLE Peace Officer Reactivation Packet document to determine if you are required to take TCOLE 1018.

Course Completion Requirements

  • The mandatory completion/duration period for this eCourse is 120 days from the registration date.
  • To complete this course, you are required to have a computer with internet access.

To successfully complete this online course, you should have access to a computer with the following system requirements:

    • Note: The use of a tablet is not recommended and may result in connectivity issues.

Attendance Requirements

To meet attendance requirements, participants must review each training module and complete all required course assignments, activities, quizzes, and/or end of course exam.

Participants in a TCOLE credit course must complete the class in its entirety to receive TCOLE credit.

The individuals listed below are deemed to have the equivalent training as a Federal Agent for licensure consideration:

  • Special Agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation;
  • Special Agents of the Secret Service;
  • Special Agents of the United States Customs Service;
  • Special Agents of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms;
  • Special Agents of the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency;
  • Inspectors of the United States Postal Service;
  • Special Agents of the Criminal Investigation Division and Inspectors of the Internal Security Division of the Internal Revenue Service;
  • Civilian Special Agents of the United States Naval Investigative Service;
  • Marshals and Deputy Marshals of the United States Marshals Service;
  • Special Agents of the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service; Special Agents of the United States Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security
  • A person designated as a Special Policeman by the Federal Protective Service of the General Services Administration under 40 U.S.C. Section 318 or 318d;
  • A customs inspector of the United States Customs Service or a Border Patrolman or Immigration Officer of the United States Department of Justice;
  • A commissioned law enforcement officer of the National Parks Service
  • A Special Agent or Law Enforcement Officer of the United States Forest Service; and
  • Security personnel working at a commercial nuclear power plant, including contract security personnel, trained and qualified under a security plan approved by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission
