Course Description

This is the IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting lesson covering fire department organization.  This lesson describes the fire service mission, organization, and regulations.  This lesson also covers firefighter roles and skills, as well as firefighter safety, health, and wellness.

Prerequisites

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

A photo identification on the first day of class.  See the Participant Handbook opens in a new tab for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines. 

PPE must be NFPA-approved.  See the Student Safety Manual to review PPE requirements for Level 4. 

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Essentials of Fire Fighting, Seventh Edition recommended.  

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  • Explain the mission, specializations, and organization of the fire service.
  • Describe fire department SOPs, rules, and regulations that affect a Fire Fighter I.
  • Explain ways that fire departments may interact with other organizations and agencies.
  • Describe fire and life safety initiatives (NFPA 1500) aimed at reducing firefighter illnesses, injuries, and fatalities.
  • Summarize general guidelines for operating safely at structural fire scenes.
  • Summarize safe practices for riding in fire service vehicles and apparatus.
  • Explain the use of emergency scene lighting and equipment, personnel accountability system.
  • Summarize general guidelines for operating safely at highway/roadway incident.
