Course Description

Work Zone Traffic ControlThe Work Zone Traffic Control course provides participants with best practices training specific to work zone traffic controls using the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and all related Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) standards. During the course, participants are provided proper traffic control set up procedures along with all related safety measure requirements necessary to reduce risks associated with work on or near roadways. Training is valid for 4 years from the date of completion.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  •   Develop a Texas-compliant work zone traffic control plan that maximizes driving public and work crew safety.
  •   Explain requirements in the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD) that pertain to traffic control devices.
  •   Discuss temporary traffic control issues.
  •   Show correct placement of traffic control devices in a temporary traffic control zone.
  •   Demonstrate appropriate use of traffic control devices.
  •   Demonstrate appropriate use of TxDOT Typical Applications.
  •   Discuss pedestrian and worker safety in a work zone.
  •   Develop a traffic control plan for flaggers.
  •   Discuss importance of management of traffic control in an incident area.
  •   Demonstrate appropriate use of TxDOT Standard Sheets.

Suggested Audience

This course is designed for city, county, state, toll road authority, public utility, contractors, and any other personnel directly involved in developing and/or implementing work zone traffic control.
