Course Description
This course prepares participants to employ best practices for the planning and operational needs of children impacted by disaster. Participants will gain the skills and knowledge necessary to make pediatric considerations/accommodations while planning and preparing for community all-hazards events. The goal is the implementation of a safe, efficient, and effective integrated response with pediatric-focused utilization of public safety response assets. This course addresses pediatric emergency planning considerations through a combination of lectures and small group activities.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Attendance Requirements
Attendance is crucial in order to receive credit for this course. All participants must complete registration prior to the beginning of the course, sign the attendance roster for each day of the course, attend 80% of the course hours, and complete the evaluation at the end of the course in order to receive a certificate of completion.
Participant Photo Identification Requirements
Participants attending face-to-face classroom training events will be required to provide photo identification. Participant identification will be verified by a TEEX-designated representative the morning of the first day o class. The proof of identification participants bring should include their full name and photograph. The following are acceptable forms of phot identification.
- Sate-issued ID such as a driver’s license or identification card
- U.S or foreign passport
- National identity card
- U.S. military card (front and back)
- Permanent Resident Card
- Certificate of Citizenship
- Certificate of Naturalization
- Employment Authorization Document
- Employee ID or badge with Photo

Recommended
Familiarity with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and the Incident Command System (ICS) via completion of FEMA independent study courses IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 (or equivalents).
Upon successful completion, you will be able to:
- Articulate the issues likely to arise within the pediatric population during disaster events.
- Examine relevant Emergency Management (EM) considerations when planning for the care and management of the pediatric population following a disaster event.
- Assess the impacts of surge and surge planning on the pediatric population before, during, and after a disaster event.
- Articulate effective planning and preparation in addressing the requirements of the pediatric population with Access and Functional Needs (AFN) in a disaster event.
- Articulate the relevant mass sheltering considerations when planning for the care and management of the pediatric population following a disaster event.
- Examine a variety of triage systems to assess their appropriateness for pediatric applications and to the allocation of scarce resources.
- Describe aspects of reunification planning that may be applied in a disaster event, emphasizing successfully reuniting the pediatric population with their families.
- Examine the considerations for pediatric decontamination.

As part of a Department of Homeland Security/ Federal Emergency Management Agency (DHS/FEMA) funded Homeland Security National Training Program Cooperative Agreement, this course is provided at no cost to your jurisdiction.
Course Delivery Dates
Course delivery dates are at the discretion of the requesting agents or jurisdiction and must be consecutive.
An interested jurisdiction/agency contacts their respective State Administrative Agency Training Point of Contact (SAA TPOC) to request a National Training and Education Division (NTED) instructor-led course. It is then at the SAA TPOC’s discretion to approve or not approve the training request. If the SAA TPOC agrees to the training request, he/she contacts the training partner directly with information about the specific course to schedule, the number of participants interested in attending the course, and a listing of preferred dates.
