Texas Private Security

The private security profession includes armed and unarmed security guards, personal protection officers, private investigators, alarm systems installers and monitors, armored car couriers, electronic access control device installers, and locksmiths.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Private Security Program regulates the private security profession in Texas. The private security profession includes armed and unarmed security guards, personal protection officers, private investigators, alarm systems installers and monitors, armored car couriers, electronic access control device installers, and locksmiths. DPS regulates the private security profession under the authority of the Texas Occupations Code, Chapter 1702 and related administrative rules.

TEEX is licensed by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Private Security Program as a Class F, Class Y, and Class O Training School.

Only those courses listed below and for which you receive a TEEX-issued DPS certificate with the Class F, Class Y, or Class O designation shown are eligible for submission to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Private Security Program at this time. If you did not receive your certificate with the Class F, Class Y, or Class O designation, or if there is another course you would like to have considered for credit submission, please contact TEEX via email at [email protected] with your inquiry. Do not contact DPS directly concerning TEEX course credit consideration requests.

Texas Private Security SAP203 Private Security Level III Practical Applications
New course! This course is designed to provide participants with the practical application skillset necessary of a commissioned security officer in the State of Texas. The course delivers Texas Private Security Program approved curriculum for commissioned security officers skills to include the demonstration and application of defensive tactics, handcuffing, and intermediate weapons and firearms. The practices taught in this course may be superseded by your agency’s departmental policy.
The range instruction on handgun proficiency must include an actual demonstration by the participant of the participant’s ability to safely and proficiently operate a handgun. TEEX will utilize the Texas License to Carry Handgun Proficiency Demonstration Course of Fire.
Participants must register and attend the SAP203 Texas Private Security Level III Practical Applications course within six (6) months of the completion date of the online Private Security Level III course.
