Course Description

worker holding a stop signThe Flaggers Instructor course is designed for industry professional supervisors responsible for work zone safety operations who wish to become flagger trainers. During training, candidate instructors are provided opportunities to demonstrate flagger proficiency as they work to develop their individual trainer skills through practice teaching assignments. At the conclusion of training, all new instructors are provided with a set of lesson plans and associated instructional materials for use when conducting classroom training and exercises for their own organization. Training is valid for 4 years from the date of completion. This certification can be recertified with the completion of HWS415 (Work Zone Traffic Control Refresher for Contractor’s Responsible Person) or HWS005 (Work Zone Traffic Control Refresher).

Prerequisites

TEEX Certification/Licensing Requirement

The participant must show evidence of completion of one of the following courses within 4 years of registration of this course.

This prerequisite may be accomplished by uploading a copy of the certificate of completion after registration using the TEEX Student Portal. Once received and approved, the participant will be notified by email they have met all prerequisites and have been added to the class roster.

Course Completion Requirements

Participant Must Provide

  • a photo identification on the first day of class. See the Participant Handbook for approved forms of identification and additional guidelines.

Attendance Requirements

Class attendance is an essential part of the education process and participants in TEEX courses are expected to attend all class sessions and field exercises. This course requires participants to attend a minimum of 80% of the class hours as a component of successful course completion. During the course, your instructor will review any additional attendance requirements, for example a field exercise that cannot be missed

Prior Training Courses or Knowledge

It is recommended, but not required, participants have prior training as an instructor, presentation experience, and a safety background.

Upon successful completion, you will be able to:

  •   Effectively present flagging principles in a classroom.
  •   Teach minimum qualifications for flaggers and requirements for safety equipment.
  •   Teach proper hand signals and use of hand-signaling devices to communicate specific instructions to drivers passing through a temporary traffic control zone.
  •   Teach basic traffic control planning using one or more flaggers.
