Basic Peace Officer

Peace Officers play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of the public. This course is designed for currently licensed or certified peace officers outside of the State of Texas, Federal Agents, and Military Police to meet training and licensing requirements set by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) necessary to receive their Texas Peace Officer licensing. Of the current TCOLE Basic Peace Officer topics, there are seven topics specific to Texas covered in this course.This course meets Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) requirements Supplemental Peace Officer Course #1018.The online course consists of seven learning modules. Prior to accessing the course, the participant is provided with an opportunity to download a study guide in an effort to enhance the retention of important course information. After all modules have been completed, the participant will receive a comprehensive final exam. All examinations must be passed with a minimum score of 80%. Participants have three attempts to pass each module exam and one attempt to pass the final exam. Module quizzes and the final examination can only be done in a single seating. Module quizzes and the final examination should not be started while on duty and/or if the participant may be called away from the computer for any reason.Note: Participants completing this course shall pass the same licensing exam as other applicants. It is suggested that participants study all topical areas of the current Texas Basic Peace Officer licensing course. Having proper skills to conduct a sobriety test is essential to successful DWI/DUI traffic enforcement. This course prepares officers to instruct the Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) course to their peers. Properly documenting and evaluating an accident scene is important to effectively investigating and analyzing the cause. This course introduces the participant to basic drawing skills needed for preparing scale diagrams of the scene of a vehicle crash. Participants will learn five basic formulas that are used to determine the minimum speed or combined speed of a vehicle based on skid and/or yaw marks.

The course expands on the fundamentals of crash investigation with special emphasis on crash reconstruction. Explosive entry continues to grow in American Law Enforcement as a viable tactical option for high risk warrants and hostage rescues. The number of explosive breaches has increased over the last few years but remains relatively low compared to the number of tactical teams in the United States. In this five-day course, explosive entries will be made through Class 1 Steel doors as well as solid wood and hollow core doors. Participants will learn the construction of distraction devices and the use of other explosives by conducting approximately 60 detonations using various amounts of explosives to ensure proper logging, placement and application of methods used to make entry in a safe but affective manner. The TEEX Explosive Breaching course is geared toward increasing the knowledge and skills of SWAT, Tactical, and EOD teams.

This course prepares participants for their transition from a traditional patrol/traffic function to an investigative position, such as a detective. The Basic Criminal Investigation course is also appropriate for those agencies that require officers to perform both patrol and investigative functions. Identification of suspects through fingerprint comparison is critical to many investigations. Mitigating the effects of these events is the responsibility of those who serve in our communities’ public safety organizations. The public expects an effective and swift response to these threats. Not all law enforcement agencies in Texas are large enough, nor can they necessarily afford, to train a firearms instructor. TCOLE 218.9 Continuing Firearms Proficiency Requirements went into effect February 1, 2020 and grants provisions for an agency or entity to designate a firearms proficiency officer.No definition of a firearms proficiency officer is given nor does the rule state the designated proficiency officer needs to be a certified firearms instructor.
