9P1381 | Building a Live Find Bark Indication – Level 1 | Quick View Course Description
9P1381 – Building a Live Find Bark Indication – Level 1This workshop helps canine handlers to learn the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to build a strong Live Find (LF) bark indication for your disaster search and rescue canine. All disaster dogs need to have a solid bark indication and handlers often try to skip steps in the training process to try and save time. The result of skipping these steps is a weak or nonexistent alert on test day and more importantly, on deployments. If the canine does not perform the bark indication, it is easy to miss survivors. This workshop will give participants a solid foundation in building the best bark alerts possible. This workshop is 16 hours of hands-on training, delivered over two days. This workshop is one of the six different hands-on training opportunities that comprises the Canine Technical Assistance Program (CTAP). The CTAP is designed to provide canine handlers practical knowledge and to receive feedback on different topics relevant to deploying (LF) and Human Remains Detection (HRD) canines to disasters. The CTAP workshops are appropriate for canine handlers that are looking to sharpen their skills and improve their capabilities by learning practical solutions to common challenges. These workshops are appropriate for canine handlers that will work with either LF or HRD canine during search and rescue operations as part of Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) Task Force (TF). 9P1386 | Stop the Shopping – Improving Commitment to Scent | Quick View Course Description
9P1386 – Stop the Shopping – Improving Commitment to ScentThis workshop helps canine handlers to learn the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to prevent a disaster search and rescue canine from “shopping”. What is shopping? When your dog locates the scent source, leaves to continue searching etc. and returns to bark at the scent source at a later time, we call it shopping. The dog knows the victim is there, but they’re not committing to a bark immediately. This is a very common problem in US&R dogs today. You may survive in a testing environment, but this could prove catastrophic in the real world. This workshop will give you several ways to trouble shoot this behavior, so that your canine will stay committed to scent. This workshop is 16 hours of hands-on training, delivered over two days. This workshop is one of the six different hands-on training opportunities that comprises the Canine Technical Assistance Program (CTAP). The Canine Technical Assistance Program is designed to provide canine handlers practical knowledge and to receive feedback on different topics relevant to deploying Live Find (LF) and Human Remains Detection (HRD) canines to disasters. RES502 | Volunteer Program – Canine | Quick View Course Description
RES502 – Volunteer Program – CanineSince 2006, Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) and Disaster City have utilized an incredible group of volunteers from the surrounding communities to assist with Urban Search and Rescue (US&R) training and large-scale exercises. The very difficult task of training for a large-scale disaster or terrorist attack requires that emergency responders be exposed to the chaos and disorganization of a disaster scene. Our volunteers help create that chaos and realism. They make training and exercises in Disaster City? the most realistic in the world. Remember, emergency responders are depending on you in order to conduct training. The most important thing about the volunteer program is to have fun. Volunteers will learn about emergency response and how search and rescue operations are conducted. Training and exercises happen in Disaster City? year round. Announcements are sent as the opportunities arise. Make sure you have signed up before you show up in Disaster City to volunteer. All volunteers will receive a confirmation email indicating that they are signed up for a particular shift. If you are part of a student organization and would like to schedule a group to come out and volunteer together, contact Paul Gunnels at paul.gunnels@teex.tamu.edu or (979) 458-5636.
